Special emphasis is placed on the correctness of the limbs. The low ranged animal seen from the front and makes up a stocky impression. The animals should run 20 years or more on that foundation. Pregnancies in this age are not uncommon and underscore the high cost of the mother cows.
Scottish Highland Cattle are late maturing, females may reach sexual maturity at 6 months. Heifers should not before the age of 30 months, be covered for the first time. Bulls should not be used immediately after the possible grading of 12 months as a top bull in the herd. The ideal age at slaughter of bulls and steers is year-round grazing in 24-30 months.
