1:1 or 20:1: What Separates Two CBD Seed Packs

22 Oct 2026
wertuslash

Place two packs of CBD seeds next to each other, one labelled 1:1 and the other 20:1, and they look the same: the same brand foil, same seed count, seeds which no eye can separate apart. Run them in the same tent and they part ways at the very first step and do not meet again. The reason is one single gene, and the easiest way to understand what it does is to follow the two packs through each step they share: the breeding that produced them, the seed, the seedling, the flower room, the harvest, the jar, the lab bench and the border. The lines quoted as examples below are drawn from the range at https://calmcbdseeds.com, which goes 1:1, 2:1 and 20:1 and a top line at about 30 to one; the genetics holds the same whichever shop the seeds come from.

How Each Pack Was Made

Cannabis settles whether it will produce THC or CBD at one position on the genome. The gene there exists in two forms: one builds the enzyme that converts the shared starting molecule into THCA, the other the enzyme that turns it into CBDA. Each plant carries two copies, one received from each parent, and the pair fixes the chemotype. Two THC copies give a THC-dominant plant. Two CBD copies make a CBD-dominant one. One of each gives a balanced plant, because the two forms are codominant and neither silences the other.

The 1:1 pack was bred by crossing two balanced plants, both holding one copy of each version. The CBD-dominant pack was made by crossing two plants that both hold two CBD copies and not a single THC copy in either of them. That one difference at the cross decides all that follows afterwards, and the difference is fully in the seed before it is put in the foil.

Stage Two: Inside the Seed

Cross two balanced plants and the offspring sort out by the oldest arithmetic in genetics: a quarter inherit two THC copies, a quarter inherit two CBD copies, half inherit one of each. In a pack of 10 seeds that means, on average, around two THC-dominant seeds, around two CBD-dominant seeds, and five genuine balanced ones. The pack is sold by its parents, and in the case of half its seeds the label fits; in the case of the other half it is a description of something else. Calm CBD Seeds states the expected split on every balanced pack, so the buyer knows before sowing that a portion of the plants will depart from the stated ratio.

The CBD-dominant pack carries no such spread. Every seed got a CBD copy from both parent, each plant will be CBD-dominant, and the ratio on the foil holds to all of them, within the ordinary variation in how total cannabinoid any individual plant builds. The trade say such lines « breed true » for chemotype; the term refers to precisely this lack of surprise.

Stage Three: The Seedling Tray

Here the two packs appear alike again, and the likeness holds longer than most growers expect. Chemotype leaves no mark on a seedling. Leaf shape, colour, internode length and the speed of growth rate are controlled by different genes altogether, and the different chemotypes of plant in the 1:1 pack come up indistinguishably from one another and from each plant in the CBD-dominant pack.

The one practical difference during this stage comes from lineage rather than chemotype. Lines with recent hemp ancestry, and that includes a number of less developed CBD-dominant lines, are inclined to stretch rangier and branch less. A well-worked 20:1 line grows like a normal indoor hybrid; a young one still shows the hemp in its frame. Not one of these tendency tells anything about the ratio to come.

When the Resin Comes In

In flower the two packs begin to offer hints, and the majority of the clues point the wrong way. Resin coverage is the first one a grower reads, and it was a fair rule: early CBD-dominant lines carried visibly less resin than their THC cousins, a legacy from hemp. Current selections have mostly erased that gap, and a lightly frosted plant from the CBD-dominant pack may still test exactly where the foil said. Trichome density and chemotype are inherited on separate genes.

Smell is worse. The terpene profile sits on yet different genes, so the THC-dominant plant hiding in the 1:1 pack can be indistinguishable to the balanced one next to it, and either can smell indistinguishable to a plant from the CBD-dominant pack. People who attempt to sort a balanced pack by nose at week eight are right about half the time, and that is not any better than leaving the plants unsorted at all.

How Late Is Too Late

At this stage the two packs differ in a way that favours the grower of the CBD-dominant pack and also the CBD-dominant plants sitting in the 1:1 pack. CBDA degrades more slowly than THCA, so a CBD-dominant plant left a week past its ideal point keeps most of its cannabinoid load, where a THC-dominant one under the same neglect has by then begun shedding THC to CBN. The usual trichome guidance still applies; it applies on account of the terpenes, which degrade on every plant regardless the chemotype, and a late, rushed CBD flower tastes of very little however good the lab result is.

Stage Six: The Jar

The CBD-dominant pack can go into one jar. Every plant from it carries about the same ratio, and mixing them changes nothing worth measuring. The 1:1 pack cannot be treated that way. Pool its 10 plants into a single jar and the contents become a ratio that no foil could have predicted, weighted by which plants grew most, and nothing on a subsequent test can pull apart the plants that went in.

The discipline that saves the grief is dull: cut the balanced pack plant by plant, dry each apart, number each, and test each one plant at a time before the crop is mixed. It is the one point in the entire grow at which the three chemotypes of plant in the 1:1 pack can yet be kept apart without a laboratory, and only because each is at that moment in its own bag.

Reading the Two Results

Submit a few grams from each jar to a laboratory and the two packs at last are legible. For the CBD-dominant pack the reports arrive back grouped tightly near the advertised ratio, varying mainly in total cannabinoid content not in proportion. For the 1:1 pack they arrive back in three groups: some reports with nearly all THC, a few with almost all CBD, and the majority sitting around one to one. No part of that result is a defect; it is the breeder’s cross expressed as numbers.

Over-the-counter test kits are sold for growers without a laboratory, and the majority of them detect whether THC is there rather than how much. That is sufficient to pull the THC-dominant plants away of a balanced pack and insufficient to put a ratio to the rest, which matches the most frequent need: finding out which of the 10 jars is going to surprise a guest.

Hemp Threshold Versus Chemotype

The last stage at which the two packs diverge is legal, and it trips growers who thought « CBD » was shorthand for « hemp ». The majority of countries classify hemp by a THC ceiling, a fraction of a percent of dry weight, and the exact figure varying from country and over time. A plant from the CBD-dominant pack producing twenty percent CBD at twenty to one at the same time produces about one percent THC, and that is several times over most limits. Compliant cultivars are selected to keep total cannabinoid output low so the THC fraction remains under the line right up to harvest; CBD flower lines are bred for rich content and allow the THC scale with it. A seller that gives only a ratio is selling a flower line; a grower who requires a compliant crop should look for a tested THC figure at harvest and buy nothing that cannot show one.

Beyond the threshold question, the chemotype alters nothing about the law on the seed itself. Where owning cannabis seeds is lawful and germinating them is not, the 1:1 pack and the CBD-dominant pack sit in the same rule as every other pack. In places where the plant is legal without restriction, the decision between them is the grower’s and nobody else’s. None of this page is legal advice, and the rule that applies is the one where the seed will be sown, rather than the one in the place it was sold.
