Decoding the THC Claim on a Seed Pack

21 Oct 2026
wertuslash

Pick up any pack of high-THC seeds and there on the label is a number: twenty-five percent, twenty-eight, 30. It is printed with the same certainty as the seed count, and it is not remotely as reliable. The seed does not contain a percentage; it carries a ceiling, while the number on the pack is one record of how near to that ceiling a particular grower, with one particular set of conditions, on one occasion came. Sellers such as https://potentthcseeds.com list lines with lab-tested results as high as 30 percent, and this article sets out to be a guide to what sits in the space between that figure and the jar in your own shelf: how the test result is produced, why it varies, what the you can control and what the genetics decides before it is even in the ground.

One Plant, One Lab, One Afternoon

A THC percentage on a seed pack originates from a laboratory test of cured flower. A grower, typically the breeder or a trusted evaluation grower, ran the line, chose a plant, harvested a sample, and sent it to a lab. The lab reported THC content as a share of dry weight and returned a report. The number on the pack is usually the highest result from that process, not the average.

Several things follow from that. The number refers to a single plant out of a pack that contains many. It refers to that plant under the test grower’s conditions, which are seldom average. And it describes a sample cut from somewhere on the plant, most often the top of the best cola, where resin density is greatest. Potent THC Seeds publishes the test report for every listed figure, with the number of plants tested, which is 12 plants on most current lines, so the range is visible alongside the top result.

THCA, THC and the Decarboxylation Trap

Read a lab report and the largest number is usually THCA, the acid precursor that the growing plant produces. THCA converts to THC under heat, and in the process it sheds a small group, which removes roughly twelve percent of its mass with it. A sample reading twenty-five percent THCA holds around twenty-two percent potential THC after heated.

Many seed packs state the THCA number because it is the bigger one. Some include the small quantity of already-converted THC on top of it without the conversion adjustment, and this inflates the figure higher still. Neither is fraud, strictly; it is convention, and the practice leans towards the larger figure. The honest comparison between two strains is on « total THC », calculated as THC plus about 0.88 times THCA, and a certificate that states that line separately is worth more.

Phenotype Variance

Grow a whole pack of a high-THC line and the plants will not all hit the stated figure. Also in a well-bred line the range from the weakest and strongest plant can be five or more percent points, and in a less stable line it can be more. The figure on the pack sits at the top of that range; most plants land somewhere beneath it.

This is not a flaw in the seed, it is how seed reproduction works. Clones reproduce a single plant; seeds sample a gene pool. To the grower this means one concrete consequence: growing several seeds and selecting the most resinous plant is the one way to approach the stated number consistently, and a person who plants one seed and expects the advertised result is betting on a draw they did not know they had entered.

Ceiling and Floor

The clearest way to see it of two numbers for any plant. The ceiling is genetic: the maximum THC which phenotype can produce with perfect conditions. No nutrient schedule, light or technique lifts it. The floor is environmental: how far below the ceiling the plant lands when something was missing.

The great majority of small grows operate well beneath the ceiling, and the distance is nearly always in the grower’s hands. And this points to a fact the seed market seldom admits: in a grower who is not yet hitting the ceiling of a twenty-percent line, a thirty-percent seed will hardly help. The extra potential sits unused over the same problems. Choosing higher genetics only makes sense after the current ones are being grown near to the limit.

The Five Things the Grower Controls

Between seed and the floor sit a handful of variables that are responsible for nearly the entire difference, and none of them is complicated.

  • Sample selection. The lab tested the top of the main cola. Shaded flowers on the very same plant come in lower; a buyer judging their whole harvest with the label figure is weighing the lot with a maximum.
  • Light intensity in flower. Trichome production follows light delivery until a ceiling the majority of home lamps never reach. Underlit flowers finish looser and less potent whatever the genetics.
  • Plant health through flower. Feeding problems, insects and stress in the last weeks pull the plant’s resources aside from trichome development. A healthy, unstressed plant finishes nearer its ceiling.
  • Harvest window. THC is highest when the majority of trichome heads are cloudy and only a few are amber; before that it has not fully forming, past that it breaks down to CBN. A week too early or too late takes real percentage points.
  • Drying and curing. Hot, hot drying burns off terpenes and turns THC to CBN; a slow dry and a proper cure keep both THC and the profile which gives it feel character.

A Short History of the Arms Race

Forty years ago a measured THC figure over ten percent was exceptional. Selective breeding towards resin, controlled cultivation and improved testing pushed the typical figure upward over the next decades, and somewhere in that rise the percentage turned from a measurement into a selling tool.

Once buyers began choosing on the figure, breeders began producing figures: submitting more samples and publishing the highest, listing THCA in place of THC, choosing labs reputed for high results. None of these practices changed any seed. What plants genuinely get stronger, yet the gap between the stated figure and the real result widened faster than plants improved. A claim of 30 percent today needs the same scrutiny as any number: tested how, on what number of plants, and reported as THCA or as total THC.

Diminishing Returns Above Twenty

Here is a point the percentage cannot capture: above a given level, the perceived difference between gets smaller. The gap between ten and twenty percent is obvious to any user; the difference between twenty-five and thirty is often invisible under the effect of terpenes, other cannabinoids, the way the flower was cured and how it was consumed.

That does not make the number meaningless; it makes it a single input among several. A well-grown, carefully cured twenty-two percent flower with a full terpene profile routinely reads as more potent than a poorly handled twenty-eight. For a buyer picking seeds, the useful reading is this: use the percentage to rule out weak lines, then decide among the remaining ones on terpene profile, plant structure and the breeder’s reputation, not by the final few percent.

How to Read a High-THC Listing

Everything above comes down to a handful of questions that are worth asking of any seed listing ahead of ordering.

  • Is the lab identified and the certificate available? Unverifiable numbers are marketing, whatever they look like.
  • Is the figure given as THCA, THC or total THC? Total is the comparable one; THCA alone inflates by about a twelfth.
  • Does the seller state a word about growing setup? « Under strong light, harvested at week ten » tells you context; nothing gives you none.
  • Does the terpene description sound like a particular plant or like a list of adjectives? A seller who has run the line describes it in detail.
  • Is a range given, or just a single top figure? A range means multiple plants were tested; a single figure typically means one.

Before You Buy

Potent THC Seeds dispatches every order in unmarked parcels with the original packs intact inside and nothing on the exterior to reveal the contents. Orders to the United States are not taken, as seed importation is not permitted there. Seed law differs widely by country: in a good number of places owning seeds is legal as collectables while germinating them is not, and in others both are permitted under licence or both is. Knowing the rules in your own jurisdiction is the buyer’s job, and no part of this article is legal advice.
